Sembrando Herencia 2024 – Más Que Pantalones

Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Austin Presents,

Más Que Pantalones
Sembrando Herencia 2024

22nd Original Community Theater Production
with special guest Rupert Reyes

December 14-15, 2024

Join the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Austin as we step into the past to explore the world of Luisa Capetillo—a fearless Puerto Rican woman who dared to put on pants, stand up for her beliefs, and inspire a movement for workers’ and women’s rights in the early 1900s. She was a poet, a mother, and a revolutionary who challenged society, not just with her words and her choice of clothing, but with her life.

“Más Que Pantalones,“ the 22nd original Musical written by Tekina-eiru Maynard, is brought to life by the dancers, musicians, martial artists, cast and crew of Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance, the official performing company of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Austin, TX. The story is inspired by the life of Luisa Capetillo–labor union leader, activist, writer, anarchist, and spiritist–who tirelessly defended the rights of women and poor agricultural workers. Despite her important contributions in the early 20th century as a passionate labor movement leader, she is most popularly remembered as the first Puerto Rican woman who dared to wear pants in defiance of traditions of the time.

Based in oral and documented history, this historical fiction is written in English, Spanish, and Taino. Set in the mid 1970s and circa 1917, it honors early 20th century female labor union leaders who fought for the rights of women and laborers and opened the doors to feminism in Puerto Rico! Traditions inherited from our Boricua Taino ancestors are also included!

The original script, music and choreographies feature original Jíbaro, Salón (Vals & Mazurka), Plena, Bomba, and Taíno music.

Special Guest Rupert Reyes–celebrated Latino playwright, actor, and director–joins our cast of actors, dancers, musicians, and Cocobalé fighters–to bring history to life!
